As a competitor, I realise how important it is to get the balance in life. It is not about the trophy, it is not about the recognition that you think you might get, it is not about the followers on FB. This is about me and my challenges and goals.
I set out on this journey last year just to see what I could do for me. As a result, I have become a stronger person both mentally and physically. This is a good thing. Now that I have also taken part on the judging panel, I can understand what is being looked at. The judges don’t know anything about me. They are looking at me just like a painting on the wall. Critiquing my symmetry and muscularity. That’s their job. I struggle with the competitive side of this industry but that’s something I’m working on.
I enjoy the training, it’s part of what I do, nothing has changed. The eating is easy, if you change your mindset. Food is fuel. Hell yes, I love cake but which do I want more? To be the best I can be or a quick 2 minutes of pleasure that really doesn’t do anything for me.
Setting yourself daily challenges whether that be in work, at the gym or in your relationship is the key. Every day I’m grateful for my health, my family and being able to do what I love. Am I any different from you, no, of course not. I still have my good and bad days but it is how you deal with them that counts.
My health is one of the most important things. Making sure I get a good nutritional balance, covering all aspects of carbs, proteins and good fats. If I need a rest day, I take it. Listen to your body. We are very clever machines. Be intuitive. Believe in yourself and your gut instincts.
They are usually right.
